November 6, 2011 Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost (Lectionary 32, Proper 27)
FIRST READING: Amos 5:18-24
18You look forward to the day
when the LORD comes to judge.
But you are in for trouble!
It won’t be a time of sunshine; all will be darkness.
19You will run from a lion, only to meet a bear.
You will escape to your house, rest your hand on the wall,
and be bitten by a snake.
20The day when the LORD judges will be dark, very dark,
without a ray of light.
21I, the LORD, hate and despise your religious celebrations
and your times of worship.
22I won’t accept your offerings or animal sacrifices
not even your very best.
23No more of your noisy songs!
I won’t listen when you play your harps.
24But let justice and fairness flow like a river
that never runs dry.
PSALMODY: Psalm 70
1Save me, LORD God! Hurry and help.
2 Disappoint and confuse all who want to kill me.
Turn away and disgrace all who want to hurt me.
3 Embarrass and shame those who say, “We told you so!”
4Let your worshipers celebrate
and be glad because of you.
They love your saving power, so let them always say,
“God is wonderful!”
5I am poor and needy,
but you, the LORD God, care about me.
You are the one who saves me.
Please hurry and help!
SECOND READING: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
13My friends, we want you to understand how it will be for those followers who have already died. Then you won’t grieve over them and be like people who don’t have any hope. 14We believe that Jesus died and was raised to life. We also believe that when God brings Jesus back again, he will bring with him all who had faith in Jesus before they died. 15Our Lord Jesus told us that when he comes, we won’t go up to meet him ahead of his followers who have already died.
16With a loud command and with the shout of the chief angel and a blast of God’s trumpet, the Lord will return from heaven. Then those who had faith in Christ before they died will be raised to life. 17Next, all of us who are still alive will be taken up into the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the sky. From that time on we will all be with the Lord forever. 18Encourage each other with these words.
GOSPEL: Matthew 25:1-1
The kingdom of heaven is like what happened one night when ten girls took their oil lamps and went to a wedding to meet the groom . 2Five of the girls were foolish and five were wise. 3The foolish ones took their lamps, but no extra oil. 4The ones who were wise took along extra oil for their lamps.
5The groom was late arriving, and the girls became drowsy and fell asleep. 6Then in the middle of the night someone shouted, “Here’s the groom! Come to meet him!”
7When the girls got up and started getting their lamps ready, 8the foolish ones said to the others, “Let us have some of your oil! Our lamps are going out.”
9The girls who were wise answered, “There’s not enough oil for all of us! Go and buy some for yourselves.”
10While the foolish girls were on their way to get some oil, the groom arrived. The girls who were ready went into the wedding, and the doors were closed. 11Later the other girls returned and shouted, “Sir, sir! Open the door for us!”
12But the groom replied, “I don’t even know you!”
13So, my disciples, always be ready! You don’t know the day or the time when all this will happen.
